Research that Benefits Children and Families

When I was expecting my first child I received  the book" What to expect when you are expecting".  I didn't think that I would read it, but finally picked the book up to read it.  What was helpful for my family was to find out there are many different ways that women experience pregnancy.  We had a great time comparing what I was going through and what other women had gone through.  I had friends that were expecting at the same time and we would search for the stories that were like ours.  I think it helped us to have healthy children and a healthy attitude about the whole experience.  Pooling many experiences of different people can be a good thing,  sharing what to expect and how to handle different things as they come along is very helpful.  We all probably spent a little less time on the phone and in the doctor's office knowing what we were going through was not an unusual

  1. Thank you for sharing your story. Is that book research based? If so, that is a wonderful resource. I have heard of that book and I know several women that have read it. It is nice to know that others are going through what you are and that your experience is also unique as well. :)

  2. Hi Carmellia,
I too read that book when pregnant! It was a good resource for me. I always thought I would not read those sorts of books when pregnant, but, it turned out I wanted to know I was not alone in what I was experiencing! I also read other books similar to this. Did you read What to Expect the First Year? I liked this one as well.

  3. I Imagine how helpful that book was for you. I had not had the chance to read that book, but if I get to expect baby again that would be in my to do list. What I do know is that each pregnant woman is so different from one another. Even for the same woman each pregnancy is different from the other. Those women that have experience more than one pregnancy can explain the differences. In my case I only have been pregnant once, but I notice that when I talk about my experience there is no one that have a pregnancy just like me, there are women that had similar experiences, but not the same. I think that is the wonderful of pregnancy.

  4. YAY! I bought that book for work -- well I bought What to Expect The First Year - because I was working with infants and toddlers. It is an excellent resource. @Josie I think most of it IS research based but the author/editors make it super easy for regular folks like us to read.
